OVERVIEW: NFC North

Look for a changing of the guard In the NFC North in 2005 as I fully expect to see the Green Bay Packers pass the torch to the Vikings and finish below the .500 mark, Pack QB Brett Favre has spent 14 of his 15 NFL seasons in Green Bay and has had a Hall of Fame career which includes the honor of being the NFL’s only three time MVP, Favre also has the distinction of being the NFL’s “Iron Man” with regard to his starting 225 consecutive games.

However, Favre will turn 36 yrs old on October 10 and his offensive line is significantly weaker with the key losses of starting offensive guards Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle, and those losses are in addition to losing starting S Darren Sharper and bit players S Michael Hawthorne and S Bhawoh Jue who provided depth in an already weak defensive secondary.

Other than snagging Favre’s replacement in QB Aaron Rogers with their top draft selection the Packers had a very average draft which is not a good thing when considering that they really didn’t pick up anyone of consequence in free agency, Green Bay opened up their 2004 campaign with a 1-4 straight up and ATS record which includes losing their first three home games to the likes of the Bears, the Giants, and the Titans which is not a good sign considering that these three teams finished up 2004 with a combined record of 16-32 straight up.

The Vikings appear to be the heir apparent to the NFC North throne as the ousting of WR Randy Moss who was nothing but a distraction along with the best draft of any team in the division and a good free agent crop might just turn these Vikings into a serious contender for the overall NFC crown when the smoke clears.

However, with that being said the real question is whether the Vikings can overcome the distraction of the team being sold as well as the silly game time decisions and poor clock management of HC Mike Tice who if you recall was busted for scalping Super Bowl tickets.

Detroit figures to give the Vikings a battle for the crown as long as they can remain healthy, Lion HC Steve Mariucci is in his third year with the organization and needs to make strides this year if he wants GM Matt Millen to hang around after 2005, Steve Mariucci was brought in after the Lions finished 2001 and 2002 with a combined record of 5-27 straight up and 15-16-1 ATS.

In Mariucci’s two seasons with the Lions they have gone 11-21 straight up and 17-15 ATS which means although slowly there has been improvement, the Lions selected three Pac-10 players with their top three choices by drafting WR Mike Williams out of USC with their top selection which makes this the third straight draft that a WR was chosen with the Lions first overall pick, with the Lions second pick they chose DT Shaun Cody out of USC and with their third choice they picked CB Stanley Wilson out of Stanford.

The Lions got a possible steal in the fifth round with QB Dan Orlovsky out of Connecticut, Detroit was also very active in the free agent wars by picking up QB Jeff Garcia who used to play for Mariucci in San Francisco and thus knows this offense very well, if QB Joey Harrington continues to under perform expect to see a switch to Garcia. The additions of problem child WR Kevin Johnson and TE Marcus Pollard will bring veteran leadership to the offense.

HC Lovie Smith and his Bears continue to be a work in progress as they once again will bring up the rear in 2005, windy city faithful had high hopes for this team following a 13-4 straight up and 11-5-1 ATS season in 2001, however, in the three seasons since that break out year of 2001 these Bears have tallied a dismal 16-32 straight up and 20-28 ATS record and the song will remain the same in 2005 as the Bears used their top draft choice on RB Cedric Benson.

Benson will in all likelihood be one heck of a back, the problem lies in the fact that the Bears don’t have an offensive line to block for the poor guy, Chicago’s terrible offensive line play in 2004 was the root cause of the Bears seeing three QB’s including Rex Grossman sidelined with injuries, its head shaking stuff to consider that this offensive line allowed a staggering 66 sacks which in the end caused the Bears to finish with an overall offensive ranking of 32nd in the league.

In closing I see the NFC North as a race between the Vikings and Lions for the top spot with the Packers coming in third and Chicago bringing up the rear, if not for the Vikings bad game time coaching I would expect to see them win this division handily, however, Viking HC Mike Tice will probably cost his team two close losses via bad decisions when its said and done.

The Vikings will probably be a public darling for most of the season so not much “Value” will be found by backing them, instead look to play against the Vikes when they are installed as road favorites this season as they are 4-10 ATS in this role over the past four years, the Vikings also tend to be way over valued by the public when playing at home as evidenced by the Vikes 1-10 ATS record as a home favorite of more than six points.

Look to jump on the Lion bandwagon this season when they are installed as road doggies, Detroit posted a road mark of 3-5 straight up and 5-3 ATS in 2004 which is eye opening stuff when considering that they had lost 24 straight road games prior to 2004, if these Lions can remain healthy and QB Joey Harrington or Jeff Garcia have a decent season these Lions will have an offense that can keep them in any game they play.

The Football League is a league competition featuring professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888, it is the oldest such competition in world football. It was the top level football league in England from its foundation in the 19th century until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split away to form the FA Premier League. Since 1992 it has had 72 clubs evenly divided into three divisions, which are currently known as The Championship, League One, and League Two.

After four years of debate, The Football Association finally legalised professionalism on 20 July 1885. Before that date many clubs made illegal payments to "professional" players to boost the competitiveness of their teams, arousing the contempt of those clubs abiding by the laws of the amateur Football Association code. As more and more clubs became professional the ad-hoc fixture list of FA Cup, inter-county, and 'friendly' matches was seen by many as an unreliable stream of revenue, and ways were considered of ensuring a consistent income.

A Scottish draper and director of Aston Villa, William McGregor, was the first to set out to bring some order to a chaotic world where clubs arranged their own fixtures. On 2 March 1888, he wrote to the Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End, West Bromwich Albion and to the secretary of Aston Villa about the formation of a football league.

The first meeting was held at Anderson's Hotel in London on 23 March 1888 on the eve of the FA Cup Final with the name of the Football League being settled at a further meeting on 17 April at Manchester's Royal Hotel. The first season of the Football League began a few months later on 8 September with 12 member clubs.

Each club played the other twice, once at home and once away, and two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw. This points system was not agreed upon until after the season had started; the alternative proposal was one point for a win only. Preston won the first league title without losing a game, and completed the first league-cup double by also taking the FA Cup.

Every original Football League club has at least one relegation in their history, unlike some European leagues such as Spain, Scotland or Republic of Ireland.

Football - The History Of The Heisman Award

At the end of every college football season an award is given out to the nations top college football player as voted on by a group of 941 media members and past winners. This award is called the Heisman Memorial Award Trophy. While this award is highly publicized by the media and football fans throughout the world, here are some interesting facts that you may not know.

History

The Heisman Award originally began by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City in 1935. It was named after John W Heisman, who was a member of the club. The actual trophy is modeled after former New York University football player Ed Smith in 1934.

The award had always been presented at the Downtown Athletic Club until 2002. The club was located near the site of the World Trade Center towers that were destroyed in the attacks of 9/11. The club was forced to close due in part to financial difficulties resulting from 9/11.

Voting Process

The voting process for football's Heisman Award is on a regional basis. The country is divided into 6 separate regions with a noted media member in charge of each region. This member then chooses a select group of other voters that are football writers, reporters, or TV personalities to also cast votes.

Dividing the country up into 6 regions helps assure there will be no regional bias for any one player. Currently there are 941 members who cast votes. The award is given out in December of each year.

Award Winners

Winners of the Heisman Football award include mostly quarterbacks and running backs. In fact, 41 of the 71 Heisman Award winners are running backs and 23 have been quarterbacks.

Charles Woodson of Michigan has been the one and only defensive player to ever win the award. He did that in 1997. Although he also returned kickoffs and punts, he was primarily a defensive back.

Archie Griffin has the distinction of being the only player in Heisman Award history to win the trophy twice. He did so in 1974 and 1975 while playing with Ohio State.

Two schools are tied with the most number of Heisman Award winners. Both USC and Notre Dame have had 7 past Heisman football trophy winners, although Notre Dame has only had one winner in the last 40 years. Ohio State has had 6 Heisman Award winners.

What Happened To A Few Past Winners?

While there have been many past Heisman Award winners go on to have Hall of Fame careers in the NFL, for many others, just the opposite has happened.

Jason White, the 2003 winner has never played a down in the NFL. Archie Griffin, the only two-time award winner had a dismal football career in Cincinnati. Andre Ware, the 1989 winner, sat on the bench for 4 years and then retired.

Eric Crouch, the 2001 winner out of Nebraska, has never played a game in the NFL. Rashaan Salaam, the 1994 winner, had several drug abuse suspensions in a very short and unpleasant career. Perhaps the most infamous Heisman Award winner of all-time is O.J. Simpson. Football - The San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers are from San Diego, CA and play their football games in the AFC Western Division. Interestingly, the San Diego Chargers actually began as the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960. Here is a brief history of this popular football team.

As one of the original members of the AFL, the Chargers played their first year in Los Angeles before permanently moving to San Diego. They came to the AFC West by way of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. San Diego plays its football games in Qualcomm Stadium. They have been playing at this stadium since 1968 and the stadium has been the host to 3 different Super Bowls over this time. The team is currently looking to have a new stadium built to replace the aging Qualcomm Stadium.

Barron Hilton, who was also the founder of Hilton Hotels, originally owned the team. He continued to be the owner until selling the team to current owner, Alex Spanos. During the 1960s the Chargers defensive line became know as the "fearsome foursome". They were led by big Ernie Ladd and would often dominate football games.

It wasn't until 1979 and the emergence of QB Dan Fouts, that the Chargers began to experience success. Leading the team to its first playoff berth in 14 years, the Chargers lost in the playoffs that year to the Houston Oilers. That started a string of 4 consecutive years of going to the playoffs, but the team could never get to the Super Bowl.

During this run, the Chargers played in one of the most memorable overtime games in NFL Playoff history. In the 1982 game against the Miami Dolphins, the team raced off to a 24-0 lead, only to lose it by the 3rd quarter. San Diego recovered and eventually won the game in overtime 41-38.

It wasn't until 1995 that the San Diego Chargers broke through to the Super Bowl. It has been to this day their only Super Bowl appearance. The team won the AFC West and went on to upset the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers to gain a spot in the championship game. Unfortunately they had to face Steve Young and the San Francisco 49ers, losing the game 49-26.

Since that season the Chargers have had its share of problems, with only 2 winning seasons and one playoff berth, that coming in 2004. Currently, Marty Shottenheimer now coaches the team.

The San Diego Chargers also have arguably the most striking uniforms of any other football team. They are known for their signature lightning bolt on their helmets and down the sides of their uniform pants.
