Are Billionaires Ruining Football?

When Roman Abramovich assumed ownership of Chelsea FC in 2003, it didn't take long for the then manager Claudio Ranieri to say he felt like he was in a sweet shop. Chelsea spent hundreds of millions on footballers and went on to win trophy after trophy.

Now comes the turn of Manchester City, whose owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has a bottomless pit of cash and whilst unsuccessful attempts have been made on players like Kaka, one feels the dam will burst and the world's best will flood in.

Money has indeed improved the Premiership, Arsenal or Manchester United finished top in every season between 1996 and 2004. Chelsea interrupted this flux and forced their rivals to concentrate on youth. Ferguson spent big on brilliant young players and Wenger sought after untouched gems.

Along With Liverpool's resurgence under Rafa Benitez , the 'top four' have become regular participants in the later stages of the Champions League. An English club has played in the final every year since 2005, a feet unthinkable before Roman's billions. This of course is cheap, the improvement described seems more a result of engineering than one of evolution.

A manager like David Moyes, who has served at Goodison Park since 2002, must wonder what more can he do? It would be intriguing to know where Everton would be had Chelsea not seen such an injection of cash. What's worse for the former Preston North End manager is that any dreams he harbours of being involved in a title race are now a million miles away thanks to the pots of gold at Manchester City.

There is a distinct difference between the wealth of Manchester United and that of Chelsea. The former has a polished business model with a global brand that has taken decades to build. If Mr Abramovich were to suddenly leave, where exactly would Chelsea be?

If, like me, you view the beautiful game as more than just a contest between 22 men then the 'money thing' should concern you. Football is becoming increasingly tainted, a playground for the rich and most worryingly a sport where a manager's hard work can be erased with a checkbook.

Getting a spot on a college football roster is no easy feat, no matter what level of football you want to play at. There are also a ton of football recruiting services out there who say they can help you reach your goal of playing at the next level. The question is, are they worth the fees they charge?

Is there a way to give yourself an edge over your competition as you try to make it to the college level? That's a question that will provide you with a variety of answers depending on who you ask. There are a lot of opinions out there about whether or not there are any shortcuts to the athletic recruiting and scholarship process. Football recruiting services are one possibility to consider, but they don't come cheap.

The average service will charge you in the thousands of dollars to help you get your name out there to college coaches. Their services are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

In return for the money you pay them, they will usually do the following:

I applaud them for helping these kids fulfill dream. However, I don't think it's necessary for high school football players to pay thousands of dollars to be promoted to college coaches. Why? Because they can and should market and promote themselves!

If you look at the list of five things I listed football recruiting services can do for you, you will see that you can all of these things yourself. It only takes a little research, time, effort and patience. There is nothing magical about what these services can do, because you can do it all yourself.

Who cares more about your football future...you or football recruiting services that are dealing with hundreds or even thousands of athletes at one time. I think you know the answer to that one. Take control and market and promote yourself!

Football - The Oakland Raiders

One of the most colorful franchises in all of professional football is without a doubt the Oakland Raiders. Based out of Oakland, CA, the Raiders are yet another original AFL member that came into the NFL during the merger in 1970. As a member of the AFC West, the Raiders have been to 5 Super Bowls, winning 3 of them. Let's take a closer look at the history of the Oakland Raiders.

Al Davis has owned the Raiders since 1972. Originally founded in Oakland, the team played there until Davis moved them to Los Angeles in 1982. Later, the team moved back to Oakland in 1995 and remains there to this day.

The football team has had the colors of silver and black since Davis was general manager of the team in 1963. He used these colors originally because all TV's were available in black and white only and these colors showed up better than others.

John Madden became the head coach of the Raiders in 1969. He later guided the team to its first ever Super Bowl win in 1976. Madden stayed on as coach of the football team until 1979 when he left the team and the league, to go into TV broadcasting.

In 1982, Davis moved the team to Los Angeles, due in part to the refusal of the city of Oakland to remodel the football stadium. In their first year in Los Angeles, the team went to the Super Bowl and won. That has been the last time the Raiders have won a Super Bowl. In 1995, the team moved back to the city of Oakland.

The fans of the Oakland Raiders are some of the rowdiest fans in all of professional football. They arrive early for tailgate parties dressed in silver and black paint, masks and costumes. One of the more rowdy spots in the stadium is known as the "black hole". This part of the stadium is definitely not for the feint of heart.

The Oakland Raiders have 18 current members in the pro football Hall of Fame. The Raiders have been known as a franchise that has had more than its share of bad football drafts over the years. This, combined with the constant head coaching changes by Al Davis, has made winning sometimes difficult over the years. One of the more memorable draft day mistakes was the selection of troubled QB Todd Marinovich.

The Oakland Raiders have some of the storied rivalries among any NFL football team, with the fiercest being San Diego, Denver and Kansas City. Even when the Raiders are not as competitive, teams do not like playing them. That is one reason why the team will always remain as one of the more popular ones in the league.
