There are many ways to set up a football pool. Here is one that is very easy to implement:

Decide how much you will charge per square. Usually $1.00 per square for a total pot of $100.00.
Decide how you are going to pay out the pot. Most common is to pay something at the end of each quarter. You can decide what percent of the pot will be paid out each time. For example, 25% after the 1st quarter, 25% after the 2nd quarter and so on until 100% of the pot is paid out.
Decide how winners will be determined. A very common way is to use the "last digit" method. Basically you use the last digits of each team's score and find where those numbers intersect on the grid. If you are not familiar with this method, it is described more thoroughly in a free ebook offered below in the Author's box. It will be easier to understand if you can see the example grid that comes with the ebook.
Now that the decisions have been made, print off a football pool grid (usually an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet with 100 squares that can be filled in with names). In case you need one, the free ebook offered in the Author's box below includes a blank football pool sheet (plus full instructions).
"Sell" squares on the grid until all 100 squares are filled in with the buyer's name. Buyers can purchase multiple squares.
After all squares are filled in with names, draw the numbers that will be filled in along the top and down the left side of the grid. Create 10 small squares of paper and then write one number (zero thru 9) on each. Fold the 10 squares and put them into something to draw from like a hat. Choose somebody to draw one number at a time and fill them in across the top starting from left to right. Fold them back up and do the same for the left side, top to bottom. When finished, the numbers will be in random order.

Accident Claims Payout Due to Faulty Football Boots

I was out shopping a few years ago, walking along the Kings Road, a very trendy shopping area in London with my wife and newborn. She was pushing the pram. Unfortunately she tripped on pavement, the buggy with our child shot across the road. In the emergency I shot into the road and luckily was able to recover the buggy, baby safe and secure.

When I returned to the pavement I found my wife buckled up on the floor with her ankle covered in blood. She was in great pain, but not enough to warrant going to Hospital. I had heard of consumers making claims to the local council. She was adamant it was her fault and that she had not been looking where she was going. Her injury cleared up in a few days, no damage was done. She made no claim and did not instruct a lawyer and in her opinion no damage was done.

I think she should have claimed. Not really for the cash award but more to 'force' the council to fix the pavement. They have a duty of care I believe to keep things in good order. In any event we did nothing. Did we do the right thing?

On another occasion I was given the wrong drugs by a pharmacist, they gave me ´uppers´ when I should have had pills for Cholesterol. I had been advised that my medication was going to change to a different pill by my doctor, so I did not question the change when I received the packet. Needless to say I lost two days of my life, spent a lot of time in Hospital and got arrested by the Police on the basis that I had a drug problem. We resolved that I did not and I was released! The drugstore said nothing. The local care trust were powerless and compensation would not be forthcoming unless I had actually died. The opinion was that the max claim I could make was for three days lost employment - the legal costs would have been higher! I think that is wrong.

On another occasion, this year, I spent most of Easter in hospital because I had been mis-diagnosed with Bells Palsy, where in fact I had a mild infection. I was given Steroids - correct for Bells Palsy - incorrect for a mild infection. A few days later I was admitted into accident and emergency with a temperature of over 40. It took them too days to calm me down and caused me to be woken every three hours for regular blood tests. It also took them too days to get to the route of the problem.

No one would say anything to me I think for fear of me taking legal action against the doctor who misdiagnosed my problem. So eventually they realized that my mild infection had turned into cellulitus and prescribed accordingly, several days later I was released from hospital. I have to admit I was relieved to be out alive. Nearly everyone expected me to sue, I decided not to, I decided that anyone could make a mistake and I was unlucky enough to be on the wrong side of it. Positively, it gave me time away from the computer(!) and strangely I found the whole event strangely relaxing and had the opportunity to see the inner workings of the local hospital. I felt good.

I have heard of people being burned due a coffee spillage who as a result suffered burns and successfully sued a major food retailer in the US. Congratulation for their reward, but as a result the world has to suffer warnings on the packaging - be careful contents are hot and may burn... This to me has helped create a nanny state. I notice too that when you buy Champagne in the US that there are warnings about corks and how they can cause damage - no kidding! Again this perpetuates the nanny state and is beyond me.

However, there is a time and a place when, in my opinion, making a claim as a result of accidental damage or faulty goods is appropriate, as the story below unfolds, this to me, is a reasonable situation. The damage sustained was substantial and the behaviour of the company was reprehensible..

An undisclosed four figure sum was paid out to a Sunday league footballer who was seriously injured because of faulty Adidas Predator Pulse football boots that cost just 120.

Mr Mike Ellis had his leg in a splint for 12 months after he was injured whilst playing in a veterans' game.

Mr Ellis was left in agony after he twisted his leg and ruptured his Achilles tendon because one of the studs on his boots snapped. As a direct result of the accident he had to have intensive physiotherapy.

After Mr Ellis returned the boots, Adidas offered 50 in compensation and to replace the boots. Mr Ellis instructed solicitors to pursue a claim for compensation as he felt that the offer was inadequate given the pain and suffering which the boots had caused. Adidas subsequently agreed to an undisclosed four-figure sum as compensation for his injury.

Mr Ellis, 46, had played football for many years and was convinced of the rightness of his claim. His case demonstrates that taking legal advice can help to achieve a compensation award that is commensurate with the pain and suffering experienced.

OVERVIEW: NFC North

Look for a changing of the guard In the NFC North in 2005 as I fully expect to see the Green Bay Packers pass the torch to the Vikings and finish below the .500 mark, Pack QB Brett Favre has spent 14 of his 15 NFL seasons in Green Bay and has had a Hall of Fame career which includes the honor of being the NFL’s only three time MVP, Favre also has the distinction of being the NFL’s “Iron Man” with regard to his starting 225 consecutive games.

However, Favre will turn 36 yrs old on October 10 and his offensive line is significantly weaker with the key losses of starting offensive guards Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle, and those losses are in addition to losing starting S Darren Sharper and bit players S Michael Hawthorne and S Bhawoh Jue who provided depth in an already weak defensive secondary.

Other than snagging Favre’s replacement in QB Aaron Rogers with their top draft selection the Packers had a very average draft which is not a good thing when considering that they really didn’t pick up anyone of consequence in free agency, Green Bay opened up their 2004 campaign with a 1-4 straight up and ATS record which includes losing their first three home games to the likes of the Bears, the Giants, and the Titans which is not a good sign considering that these three teams finished up 2004 with a combined record of 16-32 straight up.

The Vikings appear to be the heir apparent to the NFC North throne as the ousting of WR Randy Moss who was nothing but a distraction along with the best draft of any team in the division and a good free agent crop might just turn these Vikings into a serious contender for the overall NFC crown when the smoke clears.

However, with that being said the real question is whether the Vikings can overcome the distraction of the team being sold as well as the silly game time decisions and poor clock management of HC Mike Tice who if you recall was busted for scalping Super Bowl tickets.

Detroit figures to give the Vikings a battle for the crown as long as they can remain healthy, Lion HC Steve Mariucci is in his third year with the organization and needs to make strides this year if he wants GM Matt Millen to hang around after 2005, Steve Mariucci was brought in after the Lions finished 2001 and 2002 with a combined record of 5-27 straight up and 15-16-1 ATS.

In Mariucci’s two seasons with the Lions they have gone 11-21 straight up and 17-15 ATS which means although slowly there has been improvement, the Lions selected three Pac-10 players with their top three choices by drafting WR Mike Williams out of USC with their top selection which makes this the third straight draft that a WR was chosen with the Lions first overall pick, with the Lions second pick they chose DT Shaun Cody out of USC and with their third choice they picked CB Stanley Wilson out of Stanford.

The Lions got a possible steal in the fifth round with QB Dan Orlovsky out of Connecticut, Detroit was also very active in the free agent wars by picking up QB Jeff Garcia who used to play for Mariucci in San Francisco and thus knows this offense very well, if QB Joey Harrington continues to under perform expect to see a switch to Garcia. The additions of problem child WR Kevin Johnson and TE Marcus Pollard will bring veteran leadership to the offense.

HC Lovie Smith and his Bears continue to be a work in progress as they once again will bring up the rear in 2005, windy city faithful had high hopes for this team following a 13-4 straight up and 11-5-1 ATS season in 2001, however, in the three seasons since that break out year of 2001 these Bears have tallied a dismal 16-32 straight up and 20-28 ATS record and the song will remain the same in 2005 as the Bears used their top draft choice on RB Cedric Benson.

Benson will in all likelihood be one heck of a back, the problem lies in the fact that the Bears don’t have an offensive line to block for the poor guy, Chicago’s terrible offensive line play in 2004 was the root cause of the Bears seeing three QB’s including Rex Grossman sidelined with injuries, its head shaking stuff to consider that this offensive line allowed a staggering 66 sacks which in the end caused the Bears to finish with an overall offensive ranking of 32nd in the league.

In closing I see the NFC North as a race between the Vikings and Lions for the top spot with the Packers coming in third and Chicago bringing up the rear, if not for the Vikings bad game time coaching I would expect to see them win this division handily, however, Viking HC Mike Tice will probably cost his team two close losses via bad decisions when its said and done.

The Vikings will probably be a public darling for most of the season so not much “Value” will be found by backing them, instead look to play against the Vikes when they are installed as road favorites this season as they are 4-10 ATS in this role over the past four years, the Vikings also tend to be way over valued by the public when playing at home as evidenced by the Vikes 1-10 ATS record as a home favorite of more than six points.

Look to jump on the Lion bandwagon this season when they are installed as road doggies, Detroit posted a road mark of 3-5 straight up and 5-3 ATS in 2004 which is eye opening stuff when considering that they had lost 24 straight road games prior to 2004, if these Lions can remain healthy and QB Joey Harrington or Jeff Garcia have a decent season these Lions will have an offense that can keep them in any game they play.

Setting Up a Junior Football Team

Are you thinking of starting a junior football team but are unsure about how to proceed? I have recently set up such a team for the age group of under sevens and in this article I will give advice as to what is involved in the way of organisation etc.

My name is Stephen Hill and I have a son who is six years of age. I have been taking him to train with a football team for the last two months. He is however too young to play in the matches for this team which greatly annoys him as he loves his football.

A couple of weeks ago the manager of the team asked if I would be willing to start up a new team which would start playing in the league next year, this team would be for my sons age group. I was very happy that I had been asked but did not have the first idea about how to run such a team. I agreed that I would run the team but stated that I would need a lot of help in the organisation of it. This manager agreed to show me the ropes as such.

The first thing I needed to do was to seek help from other people as it would be virtually impossible for me to do it on my own. I asked around the parents of children in my childs class and explained what I was hoping to do, I was pleasantly surprised by the support shown. I soon had around five people who were happy to help with the training and on match days.

I was now starting to enjoy myself as I was starting to meet lots of new people and was aware that I was doing something good for the lads at this school including my own son of course.

I then had to think about a venue or gym where this team could hold its training sessions. My first port of call would be the school itself as it is their children who are going to play in the team. The school seemed to love the idea and agreed that I could use their school hall once a week. They also seem interested in sponsoring the team, this is where they have the name of the school on the football kit in return for supplying items such as the kit, balls, goals and cones. This sponsorship is still being discussed.

Finding children to play in the team was the next task, this however was very simple and my son himself found a number of players from his numerous friends.

When we train the emphasis is on having fun. At this age we do not concentrate too much on tactical awareness but more on the enjoyment of the game and getting used to such skills as trapping and passing the ball.

I am not trying to suggest it is easy to set up a new junior football team but it is very rewarding and is a great way of meeting new people.

Coaching Youth Football - Recruit the New Players During the Off-season

We are only coaching little kids sports, but let's face the facts, you need studs to win. A great coach cannot win with terrible talent. A bad coach can ruin great talent. This will be the topic for another article. I am not a "win at all costs" type of coach, but I do try to win every game I coach.

I know it sounds terrible, but it in the off-season make sure you recruits studs. You want to try to get the best basketball, soccer, baseball and hockey players or whatever sport is in the area. One great way of finding these kids is to be involved in coaching other youth sports. You will know which of these kids are aggressive and fast. I have coached youth basketball longer than youth football and this has always been a gold mine for football.

The second way to recruit players is your current players. All kids want to have their friends on the same youth football team. Encourage your current team to spread the word. Go and see your upcoming players in their other sports and make note of the studs. Have your upcoming players ask the studs to join the team.

You can check with your league to see if there are any boundary limits. If not you may want to check out some kids from the neighboring towns. This is especially effect if the neighboring city does not have a youth football program or plays in a different league. Sometime there is better competition or your league may offer a better weight /age advantage so these kids will switch leagues.

It is almost certain that you know someone like me. The guy that hated all school physical activities, the guy that always finished last every race. Maybe you are a bit like me also. Because of this, I grew up disliking everything about soccer and football. Unlike my friends who knew all about the famous players, the coaches and all the football tactics. In spite of everything, my childhood was a very happy one. After all, the activities related to sports were a small part of my daily living, fortunately.

On the other hand, I was born with the gift of pencil drawing very nicely. My friends, the sports fans, came to me for help with the art lessons. So a few years a go I came across Blender3d a free open source software that assists you in drawing 3D pictures and making 3D animations. There are lots of Blender3d movies out there on the net for you to watch.

After mastering the basics in 3D drawing and 3D animation a BRILLIANT IDEA occurred to me: Now I have the perfect tool to MAKE PEACE with sports.

I began to draw the most famous soccer and football teams logos in 3D. Then I started to make simple animations of these 3D logos with different camera movements and with different scenarios. Also, transforming 2D pictures of sports celebrities like players and coaches, created a challenge to me, but it come out not so bad. The next step was to publish my work on Youtube, witch I did.

Without realizing it, I had become a SPORTS FAN in my own way.

Two years ago I learned how to turn my 3D animations into Sports and Celebrities screensavers, wallpapers and desktop calendars in 3D. So this was my short story to you. Remember that ... Sometimes our weakest points can lead us to positive outcomes.

Over the years, football has become synonymous with this joyous festival of Thanksgiving.

Many interesting traditions permeate deep into the festival of Thanksgiving such as the game of football compliments this festival of merrymaking. Professional football was the last of the contemporary trends of celebrating the spirit of Thanksgiving. In 1874, eleven years after Lincoln's proclamation, the first intercollegiate football game was played. Two year later the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed in the northeast, which instituted a championship game principally to amuse the people on Thanksgiving Day. Every year, strong competitors like Princeton and Yale would vie with each other to bag the most coveted winner's trophy. Players, students and fans would wear their school colors as a mark of representation with banners flying high from carriages, hotels and business establishments of New York City. On Thanksgiving Day church services would wind up early to accommodate the fans, with the game kicking off the season of festivity for the social elite in New York. It had gained such popularity that soon by mid-1890s, 1,20,000 athletes from colleges, clubs and high schools partook in 5,000 Thanksgiving Day football games across the nation.

The custom of watching a match of football on Thanksgiving Day has evolved during the early decades of twentieth century. As football paved its way into the heart of the people winning hearts of millions, giving it a huge popularity as early as 1920s and 1930s and earning itself the much prestigious position that it enjoys at present, many people began to visit the football stadium to watch the same. Renowned teams playing for the world famous football league of America eventually established the tradition of playing nationally televised games on Thanksgiving afternoon. Besides the conventional competition organized by the nationally recognized football league in America, many high schools and colleges also organize "Turkey Day" football games over Thanksgiving weekend, often between regional or historic rival. However, Thanksgiving football played in schools and colleges of America, has now more or less faded into oblivion in most sections of the country with it being kept alive only in two franchise cities of this globally recognized football league of America, namely Detroit and Dallas, where Thanksgiving football is very much a way of life.

Thanksgiving football more often than not is associated with the team of Lions and a tradition that has been popular since 1934 in the city of Detroit. The game has been the idea of G.A. Richards, the first owner of the team with ferocious lion like quality players comprising the team. In fact four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. Some 71 years later, fans residing in the state of Michigan have transformed a local event into an annual holiday event, giving it the shape of single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. In fact no other team in professional sports can claim to be so much a part of an American holiday as that team with ferocious lion like players' team with Thanksgiving. This team has hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1934, with the exception of 1939-1944 due to World War II. The Dallas have also hosted football matches every Thanksgiving Day since 1966.

We thus find that it all saw its genesis in 1934 when a local radio executive, G.A. Richards, had purchased the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans and moved the team to Detroit, the Motor City. The Lions being nouveau arrive in town had taken a backseat to the Baseball Tigers in the sport pages. Richards had practical reasons for scheduling the game on Thanksgiving Day as he was also wise enough to figure out that the best way to give publicity to the team would be opting for the Thanksgiving Day contest for attracting the Motor City fans during the teams' first season. The fierce clash between the Lions and the invincible World Champion, meaning the robust Bears of Chicago proved to be an all time classic. The Lions were exceptionally good with eight wins backing them, leading them to their entry alongside the Bears with a 10-1 record. But Chicago had even a better record holding a commanding position with 11 straight wins. The match then reached an interesting phase where a win in the sole fateful game would ensure whether the Lions will get the first-place tie with the Bears. Two weeks in advance of that fateful match, 26,000 tickets were sold out for the "Turkey Day" clash in the University of Detroit Stadium. Richards was not disheartened over the last two losses rather pretty content the way his team performed in its very first year. His faith and confidence in the team was well rewarded when Lions won the 1935 America's popular football league Championship. The final match was scheduled on Thanksgiving Day when the Lions defeated the Bears 14-2 to bag the west Championship trophy. Radio with its huge publicity potential was used as a bait to capture the audience. Richards along with the nationally recognized broadcasting radio company, set up a 94-station network to broadcast the Lions-Bears showdown. Since then the league conventionally schedules two nationally televised games on Thanksgiving, usually featuring the famous football players of Dallas, one of the most successful and popular franchises in the sport and the players of Detroit, one of the least successful.

2006 will be the 87th season of globally acclaimed American football and is presumed to run from September 7 to New Year's Eve, December 31. Three games have been ideally scheduled to be played on Thanksgiving Day. In addition to the traditional annual game between the world renowned American football players of Detroit and Dallas home games during that day, the Kansas City Chiefs who hosted games during their days in the football league of America, will relive that tradition in 2006 by hosting the players of Denver on Thanksgiving. All these games are scheduled to be broadcast in prime time.

Friends and family all over America usually prefer to huddle around their radio or TV sets to catch the live telecast of the match while munching on the special dishes prepared to commemorate Thanksgiving. Thus each Thanksgiving would actually revive the old, classic tradition of enjoying a match of football as a part of the celebration. Over decades, football and Thanksgiving has established a strong bond, leading to a high adrenaline rush.

Fantasy Football IDP - The Other Chris Johnson

As the official start of the fantasy football season draws closer and your league contains roster spots for IDP's (Individual Defensive Player) don't overlook Chris Johnson. No, not THAT Chris Johnson; the other half of the Tennessee Titans "smash and dash" duo. I am referring to Chris Johnson, cornerback for the Oakland Raiders.
Johnson's greatest characteristic isn't his 6'1", 198 pound frame or the three interceptions and 34 tackles he totaled last year or even the dominance he established when Oakland finally released the petulant DeAngelo Hall. His greatest characteristic is the situation he is in.

For starters, he plays alongside Nnamdi Asomugha. Now, I wouldn't recommend drafting Asomugha instead of Johnson based on the simple fact that Asomugha is just too good. Asomugha made opposing teams pay in 2006 for unknowingly throwing his way. He snagged eight interceptions that year and ever since then teams have stopped throwing his way. He is the definition of a "shutdown corner". Shutdown cornerbacks are a rarity to find on most defenses and offenses avoid them like a man who has The Swine Flu. That is probably why the Oakland Raiders inked him to a 3-year, $45 million deal this year. However, this extremely benefits Johnson's stock. It simply means that quarterbacks have to throw his way. The chances for Johnson to make plays will be practically unlimited.

Also, another good attribute of his situation is the fact that he's in Oakland. A big majority of the 32 NFL teams do not fear the Raiders. Opposing teams will not put the reigns on their offenses in Oakland. Once again, in steps more opportunities for Johnson.

So, thanks to his partner in crime Asomugha and the sad state the Raiders are currently in, Chris Johnson earns my vote as a prime IDP sleeper pick. Just imagine if you are lucky enough to draft the Titans' Chris Johnson and grab the Raiders' Chris Johnson in the later rounds you could name your team "Johnson & Johnson"! Hey, it's not that intimidating of a name but at least it's just as intimidating as the Raiders. On second thought, you might be able to build a decent fantasy football team core with all the Johnson's (Andre, Calvin, Larry and both Chris')! But stay away from Brad.

Coaching Youth Football - Attending Camps and Seminars Including Coaching Clinics

One of the very best things you can do in the off season is attending the many different youth football clinics and camps. There are the major camps that have huge sponsors like NIKE and a variety of coaches from youth sports to college will be giving lectures. Some of these camps last over a few days and can be expensive but if you look at the itinerary and plan your days you should get a lot of information. Just remember that any of the High School and College information must be modified for the youth football level.

If you are not into the big major events the local Community Colleges and High Schools will be running some kind of clinic or camp. If you are on the board for your organization you can probably get one of the local High School coaches to come by and give your league their own private clinic.

A few of the youth football organizations are starting to run their own camps. This can be for the kids as well as the coaches and if do right can be a fundraiser as well.

It is best to check in the local papers for the camps closest to you or the internet if you don't mind traveling. I live in Illinois and there are many local camps and quite a few right over the border in Wisconsin. Try to contact the camps ahead of time so you can get a list of coaches who have attended their camp in the past so you can get a better idea on what to expect.

Have you caught Sunday Night Football with John Madden and Monday Night Football on ESPN yet. It's a dream come true for most football lovers.

Since Monday Night Football has always been on ABC since it's beginning almost 40 years ago, it is a little strange for it to be on a different network. It seemed like the end of an era last year when the last Monday Night Football on ABC aired, complete with scenes throughout the years.

At the same time, what we have now is, in my humble opinion, a great combination. Something we only dreamed about when I was I kid.

On Sunday night we get Sunday Night Football with John Madden and Al Michaels, the same team that has headed up Monday Night Football for the last several years. I can't imagine televised football without John Madden and him drawing little diagrams on the screen.

And then on Monday night we get Monday Night Football on ESPN. I remember when ESPN first began in the early 80's, who would of thought that it would one day host the institution of Monday Night Football?

And yet ESPN has brought a certain pop and attitude to MNF that I really did not realize was missing until this year. One of the best and wisest things they did was to keep the same theme song music.

So heres to Sunday and Monday Night Football. Perhaps we can begin to add the other night now as well. That would be something, wouldn't it?

Should Girls be Playing Youth Football?

This may be a bit of a controversial subject for some but in the society we live in the answer should be a resounding no!

Do some girls have the size and aggressiveness to play youth football? Absolutely, I see sisters of my players that would make excellent football players, but I’m not sure it would be the best for the girl or the boys on our youth football team.

Today’s society seems to want to devalue women, rap music with its demeaning depiction of women as throw aways and worthy of abuse, TV and movies that depict women as abuse worthy sex objects and the same with the print media and the mainstreaming of pornography.

In inner-city Omaha nearly 70% of our players have no man in the home. If you think I'm exaggerating, we have had games with 2 people in the stands and both were females, not enough for a chain crew. This was not a one time deal, we have had many games where we did not have 3 males to run the chains. Many of our players have no model of behavior in the house to “copy” of how to properly treat a woman. The kids often see first hand women being physically and mentally abused and of course they hear it in the music they listen to, on TV and in print. I've been coaching youth football for 15 years and the "dadless" house problem is getting worse every year. Tom Osborne in his book "Faith in the Game" claims this problem is increasing and is responsible for the majority of crime and problems with young males.

If we let girls play tackle football with boys, we teach the boys that harsh physical contact with females is acceptable behavior. In fact as coaches we would have to encourage and reward this physical contact. Our players would get in the habit and be used to being physical with females, the act would desensitize everyone involved in the activity of physical force being applied to females by males. The female in the meantime is learning that harsh physical contact with males is acceptable, it is now a habit. Now while having females on your team may help the short term progress of some of our football teams I’m not sure we are helping either the boy or the girl in their long term development as productive members of our society.

Girls are as good as and even better at boys at many activities, this is not about the girls having the ability to play. This is about breaking the abusive cycle many single parent families or even two parent families are in today. In my mind, coaching youth football is much more than teaching kids how to run good football plays and how to block and tackle. It is about teaching valuable life lessons the youth football player can take with him for use in his entire lifetime. My dad taught me how to treat women with reverence and respect and I was rewarded for that behavior with a wonderful wife and very satisfying family life. Dad not only told me, he showed me, even when him and mom had disagreements, they never got loud or physical. He modeled the proper behavior every day, many of our kids NEVER see that proper behavior being modeled for them. As a boy, we were threatened that hitting a girl or even pushing one was "mortal sin" material that could never happen. If it did happen, I would be dealt with by my father in the most extreme severe way, in addition it was also deemed cowardly.

In 2001 we had an 8 year old football player of one of our Omaha teams strike a girl in the face with his fist over some type of disagreement in the playground area of our field. Of course we spoke to the boy and let him know he should never strike a woman and dismissed him from our program with the promise he could come back the next year if we saw significant improvement in his attitude and actions. We felt he needed the program and contact with strong male role models. The player had to attend every practice and the games and watch, not play. We persuaded the parents of the struck girl not to press formal charges. Beleive it or not the striking players "grandpa" argued the kids case and said the girl "pushed him first". That made me ill, the poor kid has no dad in the house and a "grandpa" that thinks it's ok to hit girls in the face that push you first. No wonder his daughter had no man in the house. I wanted to smack grandpa in the face but thought that would not be the right message for the boy to see either. We really worked this kid, but I have feel there is a very high probability this player will be a woman user/abuser when he gets older and will have a very unsatisfying family life. While the grandson did come back, grandpa was not invited to coach again for us.

I'm never going to allow females to play in my youth football program. I don’t want our football players life lessons and memories to include when our stud linebacker knocked the stuffings out of a girl running back who had snot bubbles and tears streaming down her face.

However, some people will bite the hand that feeds it. In our rural program we have had no female football sign ups. In Omaha we have had a few moms try and sign their daughters up for football. After the initial disappointment wore off and the mom was told why we think it makes sense in the long run for females not to play, the moms were very supportive. I can think of just one case where mom didn’t "get it" and pulled her son out of the program because we would not allow her daughter to be pummeled by boys on our team. I can still see her today, a single mom with 3 kids that needed the program who refused to listen to reason. This mom had two missing front teeth, probably caused by the same cycle we were trying to help break.

Today we have tackle football and even wrestling between boys and girls, whats next boxing? or how about ultimate fighting? Where do we draw the line? If gilrs are as good as boys in football, why not boxing? Why not wrestiling? Why not Ultimatre Fighting?

There are some that don't care about the long term implications for both parties, they just have a selfish desire to see their children excell, no matter the cost. I cringe at what's in store for that poor girl.

Let's draw the line at tackle football.

Who would you say are the best four English footballers that are playing in the Premier League? This is one of those typical questions that is often asked during a pub discussion with your friends on a Friday night. In this article I will be writing about "my top four"; I hope you enjoy the read.

The Premier League is without doubt the best league for drama, passion and excitement in Europe. Just comparing it with the Italian Serie A and you see that the two leagues are a million miles apart, unless you enjoy watching boring defence minded and extremely one paced football - or unless you are an Italian!

Going back to my top four - the numero uno player has to be Mr Liverpool himself, Steven Gerrard. He is just one hell of a player. Some would argue that he has never really "done it" for England however I am sure he will put that right in next years World Cup. Steven has been the driving force behind the Liverpool team for the last few seasons and has proven to be an inspiration to his fellow team mates and supporters alike.

In second spot I would have to pick John Terry. He is a born winner and is also a natural leader. As well as being a dominant central defender who is an excellent reader of the game he also chips in with a few goals.

In third place I have Frank Lampard. This midfield dynamo just seems to get better and better. He is the model professional who like Steven Gerrard scores a great number of goals from midfield. I personally would play Frank in the centre of midfield for England with Gerrard "in the hole", real football fans will understand what I mean by this.

In fourth place I have Ashley Cole. I really do not want to pick Ashley as he annoys the hell out of me with his petulant behaviour. He is however an excellent player and his FA Cup final performance in the win against Everton (for Chelsea) was quite outstanding.

Well there we have it - my top four - what do you think?

The English Premiership football league has just commenced a new season and already football fans from all over the world have been treated to a feast of exciting games. There really is no comparison in the quality of this division compared to other leagues from around the world, the premiership truly is the best.

Just looking at the Italian premier is a good example, this country boasts some of the top footballers from around the world but the games are just so boring to watch. Channel four from the UK used to air a match every week on a Sunday from this league but it has now been taken off our screens due to a lack of viewers, that says it all.

Just last season, on the final game of the Italian league, one particular team were having to win their last home game to avoid being relegated. The problem they had was the fact that they were playing the champions, Inter Milan. This would normally be a virtually guaranteed away win but for some reason the bookmakers were offering nine to one on a Milan victory. These odds looked very generous but very few people put money on Milan to win. It was no surprise to hear that Milan had lost the game by two goals to nil, that is the Italian league for you!

Boring is something you could not describe the majority of games from the English premier league, a better description would be fast and furious. Even the most ardent of Liverpool supporters would agree that you can not beat watching Manchester United when they are in full flight, players like Giggs, Ronaldo and Rooney are just exceptional talents.

I actually support Birmingham City, this is a team that will be happy to avoid relegation this season as they have just been promoted from the championship.

I would advise any football supporter from around the world to regularly watch the matches from the English premiership as you will not be disappointed.

Lately, the Lions have also had a knack for finding explosive offensive talent (sans Joey Harrington). Don't expect Pettigrew to put up Antonio Gates-esque numbers. But, he still remains the Lions best option at tight end.

Another rookie tight end worth taking a look at is Chase Coffman. Coffman's big frame (6'6", 244 lbs) comes with a bigger risk on draft day than Pettigrew will. For starters, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. They only averaged 150.4 pass yards per game last year. Secondly, Coffman will be playing second fiddle to Reggie Kelly. But, there is an upside! For starters, he is behind Reggie Kelly! Kelly continued towards a second disappointing season last year, which should allow Marvin Lewis to give Coffman an even closer look. If Lewis wants a touchdown scored from his tight end, then Coffman is the answer not Kelly.

While I wouldn't recommend relying too heavily on Pettigrew and Coffman, they are viable bye week relief and/or bench players (after all, they ARE on the Bengals and the Lions). Pettigrew offers the most upside and who knows, he might be able to put up some decent numbers. If he does, you can finally talk some trash to that guy in your league who allegedly "discovered" Matt Forte before "anyone even heard of him".

Nevertheless, if your draft is still taking place and you still want to wait on a tight end, well, Jermaine Gresham comes out next year.

The 2008 Cincinnati Bengals finished 4-11-1 thus once again living up to their famous ineptitude and giving their fans virtually nothing to cheer about for the majority of the season. Well, what do you expect when you have Ryan Fitzpatrick leading your team? The teams downfall last year can be directly attributed to the elbow injury that sidelined QB Carson Palmer much of the season leaving the reigns to a signal caller who is completely incapable of throwing a downfield pass. Palmer only played in 4 games last year and that clearly impacted the rest of the offense especially the receivers. What do the 2009 Bungles have in store for fantasy owners? Let's dissect that very topic.

It is amazing to me that teams do not invest more in their backup QB's and it is absolutely astonishing that someone like Fitzpatrick (now with the Bills) is in the NFL. I watched a few of their games last year and he literally never attempted a pass more than 10 yards downfield. Enough about Fitzpatrick however as Palmer looks 100% and will be under center when the Bengals open their season September, 13th at Paul Brown Stadium against the McDipshit led Denver Broncos. I am looking for the Bengals to rebound this year and possibly make a run at the playoffs and if that holds true will be largely due to Palmer's rebound. Palmer has been an elite fantasy QB in the past and I believe he has the potential to get back to that level in 2009. First, Palmer's elbow appears to be 100% based on all reports coming out of Cincinnati. Furthermore, although T.J. Houshmandzadeh has left for Seattle Chad Ocho Cinco seems to be motivated again as he has been working out using a boxing regime. Ocho Cinco called 2009 an "embarrassment" and also said that "words cannot explain what kind of shape I am in right now". The team also signed former Jet Laveranues Coles and although a step down from Houshmandzadeh will provide Palmer with another nice threat on the outside to go with Ocho Cinco and Chris Henry. I think Palmer could really be in line for a nice year this year and I consider him a low end number 1 QB with high upside potential.

The Bengals may have found themselves their workhorse back with former Chicago Bears castoff Cedric Benson toting the rock in 2009. Although averaging only 3.5 ypc last year Benson seemed motivated and was a nice surprise for Head Coach Marvin Lewis last year rushing for 747 yards and 2 TD's. Cincinnati elected to bring Benson back signing him to a 2 year deal thus illustrating the teams confidence in him. I actually like Benson this year as a number 3 back with the potential to start as the year goes on. First, Benson will be the workload this year for the Bengals and will also be the goal line back. Moreover, the team released the under achieving Chris Perry leaving the team with just Kenny Watson and rookie Bernard Scott to go along with Benson. Finally, the drafting of LT Andre Smith out of Alabama is another sign for both Benson and Palmer. I really think Cincy will be improved this year and if they are it will be due to Palmer's passing and Benson's running. If you can snag Benson this year after the 6th or 7th round you are committing larceny. Neither Scott nor Watson warrant draft picks at this time in any format.

I saw the segment with Ocho Cinco on NFL Network and he called last season an "embarrassment".

When you analyse things #85 must surely improve from 2009 when caught a mere 53 passes for 540 yards and just 4 TD's. Much of this can be directly attributed back to Fitzpatrick but obviously the year was a complete bust and yours truly actually cut Ocho Cinco after 5 weeks because he was such a joke. I actually look for Ocho Cinco to rebound much in the same way I believe the Bengals as a team will. Houshmandzadeh being gone will help as Ocho Cinco will surely see more balls his way. Draft Chad as a nice number 3 WR and if he and Palmer get back on the same page could catapult himself back into number 1 status. Coles is a steady veteran and although I wouldn't recommend starting him is a nice player to have on your bench to use in a pinch or a bye week replacement. The receiver I really like out of Cincinnati is Chris Henry. Palmer has always had a great rapport with Henry and swears that the troubled receiver has finally gotten his life together off the field. Henry is a huge target with a lot of talent and in the mock drafts I have been participating in has been going very late. Take a chance on Henry if he is available after round 12 as he may pay big dividends for you this year. No Bengal TE is worth drafting at present time.

The addition of LB Rey Maualuga represents a nice addition for the Bengals DST which showed nice improvement as the year progressed. That being said look for other options when it comes to picking your first unit DST. Shayne Graham is serviceable at the all important position of kicker but be leery of the fact that he will be kicking in inclement weather as the season deepens.

In summary, there may be some decent fantasy values this year for the Bengals who will be looking to rebound from last seasons disappointment. Next up: The Cleveland Browns.

Injuries on the playing field are common. But for those like Bennie Joppru, who has not played a game in three seasons due to an injury, this season may be his last. When a player is considered ‘injury prone’, they run the risk of being cut from the team. Injuries will happen, but players are expected to make a full recovery and quickly. Many in the NFL wonder if this is fair. Bodies heal from different injuries at different rates. Depending on the players age, past injuries, and current injury, they could be out of the game for a season or more.

Donovan McNabb has been out of the game since last season because of an injury. Other players such as Domanick Davis and Mewelde Moore are other players who will need to make a comeback this season. When a player is injured and back on the field, other players may have to compensate by catching more balls and running more yards because of injured teammates. If an injury is big enough, a player could end up without a job.

Injuries should be attended to immediately. Players do need to rest until they are ready to play again. But in an industry that is youth driven and money hungry, injured players are not considered an asset. Even though many teams will give their players a chance to prove themselves, the amount of pressure to perform can be too much to handle. Many players need to plan for a future without the NFL after they are injured and cannot play for an extended period of time.

Youth Football - Is Face Tackling Legal in Youth Football?

Had a question come to me via e-mail this week from a first year youth coach: Is face tackling legal in youth football?

The current NFHS Rule book defines Face Tackling under NFHS 2-20-1.b (Illegal Helmet Contact) as, "Face Tackling is an act by a defensive player who initiates contact with a ball carrier with the front of his helmet".

This is a 15 yard penalty and was put in the rule books over 20 years ago. Unfortunately many coaches that are coaching youth football haven't played for over 20 years and don't know that not only is this illegal, it can be dangerous. Leading with the head or face inherently puts undue pressure on the head and neck. This can be a very dangerous method of tackling at the youth level.

This penalty could also be invoked against those players who are taught to "bite the football", a popular tackling coaching point with many football coaches. Often players instructed in this fashion initiate contact with the facemask, which is a clear violation of this rule.

While many tackling fads come and go they must always pass the safety and rules test, no matter how effective they may be. I've seen this tackling technique taught by a former High School coach of the year in Omaha, but that doesn't mean the rule book doesn't apply to him or your team.

Make sure you are teaching safe AND legal technique to your kids this coming season.

Since the devastation of Katrina, residents in New Orleans have been trying to put their lives back together. NFL stars Peyton Manning and his brighter Eli have given time, money, and support to their city. They will be donating more time at their family’s summer football camp started by their father eleven years ago to help kids improve their skills in football.
This camp is not just a way to help kids excel in a sport. It is also a place for them to make new friends, learn about teamwork, and get away from the mess in New Orleans. Most of the kids that attend the camp play on their high school football teams. Since Katrina, many schools have been struggling to find the funds to afford new equipment and in some cases, new playing fields. Hosting the kids at the camp is a way to lift their spirits and be able to play football on clean fields.

Since the Manning brothers are from New Orleans, they were some of the first NFL stars to return and begin helping people rebuild their lives. The camp is just another way they can help. Now comes the turn of Manchester City, whose owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has a bottomless pit of cash and whilst unsuccessful attempts have been made on players like Kaka, one feels the dam will burst and the world's best will flood in.

Money has indeed improved the Premiership, Arsenal or Manchester United finished top in every season between 1996 and 2004. Chelsea interrupted this flux and forced their rivals to concentrate on youth. Ferguson spent big on brilliant young players and Wenger sought after untouched gems.

Along With Liverpool's resurgence under Rafa Benitez , the 'top four' have become regular participants in the later stages of the Champions League. An English club has played in the final every year since 2005, a feet unthinkable before Roman's billions. This of course is cheap, the improvement described seems more a result of engineering than one of evolution.

A manager like David Moyes, who has served at Goodison Park since 2002, must wonder what more can he do? It would be intriguing to know where Everton would be had Chelsea not seen such an injection of cash. What's worse for the former Preston North End manager is that any dreams he harbours of being involved in a title race are now a million miles away thanks to the pots of gold at Manchester City.

There is a distinct difference between the wealth of Manchester United and that of Chelsea. The former has a polished business model with a global brand that has taken decades to build. If Mr Abramovich were to suddenly leave, where exactly would Chelsea be?

If, like me, you view the beautiful game as more than just a contest between 22 men then the 'money thing' should concern you. Football is becoming increasingly tainted, a playground for the rich and most worryingly a sport where a manager's hard work can be erased with a checkbook.

The parents will fall in line if they see that their kids are having fun. Please remember most of these kids will not go on to play high school sports. It is very important that you give them a memorable experience while you're coaching them.

I have seen way too many coaches have the military approach, which we strongly disagree with for youth football. There's a big difference between running a strict disciplined team versus a military operation. Useless conditioning and exercises prove that the coach does not know what he's doing and covers it by running these ridiculous "boot camps." Please remember to keep it light, and have fun.

The same thing goes for your coaches. Coaching youth football needs to be fun for all. You will be dedicating many hours over the course of a season so you should make it fun for all. I am so close to my coaches that we socially get together with the wives on a regular basis.

You can take it serious and try to win but do not take a win at all costs approach. The parents, kids and assistant coaches will hate you for it. Coaching Youth Football - Homecoming Or Rally Night For Youth Football

I hate homecoming games for youth football. My record with the last five teams I have coached is 1-4. What is the purpose of a "homecoming"? I believe it is for prior players and families to come back and support the team. What a bunch of hogwash! I have never seen any returning players come back to watch a game because it was a homecoming game. The other players will come back if they have a sibling playing on your youth football team.

The truth is the players get completely distracted. They want to screw around, paint their faces and pig out on junk food. Some parents want to have parties before and after the game. A double dose of BS as far as I am concerned.

Once again, we live in a democracy so I need to deal with youth football homecoming. I have found it best to use that Team Mom and depending on how she and the other parents feel about it let them have at it. I ask that the festivities be held after the game. Let Team Mom put together a committee and make homecoming as big as they want. I usually leave after the game to go scout. Some of my assistants have enjoyed hanging out after the game for the social event. I know it is for the kids so I try to keep a low profile regarding homecoming. You will want to check with your league as to what the require you to do. Make sure the Team Mom coordinates with the cheerleaders since they live and die for this day. Some years the cheerleaders have made a banner for the kids to run through. This really keeps the focus in check before the game (joke).

One youth football league I coached for had a rally night. I thought this was a good idea. They had the Youth football Rally Night before the first game. This is brilliant since all teams are undefeated at this point and optimism is at the highest level.

All the youth football teams would line up and each player had his name announced. The player would run through a large inflatable helmet. This helmet came from a local high school. Each player gets his moment in the sun by running through this helmet. I believe they even used a fog machine so the players ran through a cloud of smoke. They had one of the families donate hamburgers and hot dogs. All food was cooked and given to the players free. The league bought Gatorade which was given free too the players.

This was well run and fast. There was no youth football game following the event so the kids were able to be as crazy as they wanted to be.

President Obama Weighs in on a College Football Championship Game

President Obama is looking to change America, and one place he is clearly focused on is the Bowl Championship Series. Forget about Wall Street, the president is looking to shake up college football by creating something that football fans have been begging for for years: a playoff.

Even with President Obama's blessing, college football may still not get a playoff. President Obama has made no secret that he is an avid sports fan. He has made several appearances on ESPN. He created a college basketball bracket for March Madness. He talks about how he installed a basketball court in the white house. He has also made several statements that he believes college football should implement a playoff. Before he was elected, he told Chris Berman on an episode of Monday Night Football, that, "I think it's about time college football had a playoff." He also reiterated this point after the election on an episode of CBS' "60 Minutes."

According to President Obama, his proposed system will have eight teams that would play for over three rounds before the national champion is declared. This system sounds very similar to the one that the Mountain West Conference presented to Congress to decide the National Champion. He is also aware that the system will add another three weeks to the season so the best solution according to him would be to shorten the regular season instead. He ends by saying that this system is the right thing to do

College football fans and media have been clamoring for a playoff to replace the BCS for several years to no avail. And it is yet to be seen if even the urging of the President will alter the mindsets of the BCS committee. Momentarily, the decision is not President Obama's to make. However, now that the Utah attorney general has brought an antitrust lawsuit against the BCS, the government may get involved in how college football crowns their National Champion after all.

The Football League is a league competition featuring professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888, it is the oldest such competition in world football. It was the top level football league in England from its foundation in the 19th century until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split away to form the FA Premier League. Since 1992 it has had 72 clubs evenly divided into three divisions, which are currently known as The Championship, League One, and League Two.

After four years of debate, The Football Association finally legalised professionalism on 20 July 1885. Before that date many clubs made illegal payments to "professional" players to boost the competitiveness of their teams, arousing the contempt of those clubs abiding by the laws of the amateur Football Association code. As more and more clubs became professional the ad-hoc fixture list of FA Cup, inter-county, and 'friendly' matches was seen by many as an unreliable stream of revenue, and ways were considered of ensuring a consistent income.

A Scottish draper and director of Aston Villa, William McGregor, was the first to set out to bring some order to a chaotic world where clubs arranged their own fixtures. On 2 March 1888, he wrote to the Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End, West Bromwich Albion and to the secretary of Aston Villa about the formation of a football league.

The first meeting was held at Anderson's Hotel in London on 23 March 1888 on the eve of the FA Cup Final with the name of the Football League being settled at a further meeting on 17 April at Manchester's Royal Hotel. The first season of the Football League began a few months later on 8 September with 12 member clubs.

Each club played the other twice, once at home and once away, and two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw. This points system was not agreed upon until after the season had started; the alternative proposal was one point for a win only. Preston won the first league title without losing a game, and completed the first league-cup double by also taking the FA Cup.

Every original Football League club has at least one relegation in their history, unlike some European leagues such as Spain, Scotland or Republic of Ireland.

What kind of bet can you make?

The most popular type of sports bet made on football games is the spread bet. Spread bets include an underdog and a favorite, and a certain amount of points a team must win or lose by in order for the bettor to collect. They look like this:

Whether you are betting the money line (which we will get to in a second) or the spread, the team with a negative sign near it is always the favorite. Being the favorite means that the most people are placing bets on this team, which may or may not indicate their chances of winning. So, in the above scenario, the Bears are the favored team (haha!). This spread also indicates the amount of money wagered in order to win. Every bet of $150 on the Bears will collect $100 if the Bears beat the spread. Betting on the Patriots, on the other hand, means that you stand to gain $180 for every $100 that you bet.

The spread is favored in football because it carries an extra element of security. That security is represented by the -10.5 figure. This means that in order for people to collect on wagers placed on the Bears, Chicago must win by at least 11 points. If they only win by 9, those betting on the Patriots will win the bet (which means that underdog bets will still win, even if the underdog team actually loses). That extra .5 of a point is added so that there is no "push", or tie, on the bets.

The second most popular type of sports betting action when it comes to football betting is wagering on the money line. This is your standard bet, where money is placed on one team to win. Money lines are expressed much the same as spreads, but without the points indicator. Generally, money lines cost more money to bet on the favorite in order to win $100 because a victory is easier to predict than a difference in points.

Other types of wagers in football betting:

There are quite a few different types of sports betting wager placed on football games, which can add some spice to your betting life. Over/under bets are placed according to the total amount of points both teams will score in a game. For example, a sports book might place the combined total score of a football game at 55. Bettors would then decide whether they thought the combined score would be over or under that total, and place wagers accordingly.

Futures, totals, squares, and parlays are all also popular in football betting.

In part one of football tackling we asked if there was a new science to tackling and as taught by Chuck Clemens from the University of Central Missouri we determined there is.

Nothing says good hit like hearing the pads popping and nothing feels better to a tackler than driving a ball carrier to the ground.

Those kinds of tackles happen by design and begin with the basics. This article will focus on proper tackling drills, training football players tackling techniques that are safe and work.

Starting with angle, regardless of how fast the ball carrier is, if you have the right angle of pursuit, you can hone in on the runner like radar and make a bone jarring tackle. The kind of tackle the opponent remembers and will make him want to stay out of your area.

Regardless if you are tackling at an angle or from the front, as you approach the ball carrier, lower your body, knees bent and have your arms spread wide to wrap around the ball carrier. As you prepare to explode into the tackle, keep your head up, eyes on the runner and throw your arms forward, thrusting your arms with force will add to your forward momentum.

Make sure your head is on one side of the runner, or the other, never hit an opponent with your head. It can lead to serious injury or death. As you explode into the ball carrier, lead with the outside shoulder and wrap your arms around the ball carrier. Keep your feet moving so you can drive through the guy so you can drive him out of bounds or into the turf. You want to hit the runner around the waist or legs.

Great tackling starts with practicing the fundamentals. When practicing these tackling drills, use a tackling dummy or a teammate, always start at half speed and focus on tackling techniques, balance, feet moving and driving up and through the ball carrier and always have the head on one side or the other of the runner.

Football Defense - Pass Rushing - Part 1

The variations of the Spread Offenses puts the ball in the air more, making it more important for defenses to successfully rush the passer. This article, part 1, will focus on Swim Move, one of 4 proven pass rushing techniques that produce a more effective pass rush.

1. Swim Move:

The Swim Move is a favorite pass rushing technique of many defensive linemen and can be the most dangerous. The pass rusher has to rise up above the blocker, however if done properly it can be one of the easiest ways to successfully rush the passer. Timing is key to a successful Swim Move, the D-linemen must beat the blocker off the snap of the ball.

Next comes a jab step designed to get the blocker off balance. This is when the defender step one direction while intending to move another. This is followed by a short balanced step using the jab foot, bring it in front of the blocker in the opposite direction. Typically the blocker will follow the first step, the jab step, and find himself off balance.

At the same time the pass rusher brings his inside arm up and reaching out to the back of the blocker, pulling the O-lineman forward, exploiting his lack of balance and swim through the offensive line to effectively rush the passer.

Once the defender swims through the line, he wants to be running at the quarterback with his hands up, fully extending and waving his arms. This puts him in position to disrupt the play by temporarily blocking the quarterback's vision, tip the ball, knock the ball down, or make the pick. At the same time he is poised to make the quarterback rush his throw or sack the quarterback. If he can sack the QB with his arms raised the defender can bring his hands down with more force to attack the ball and possibly force the fumble.

The construction of modern day football boots is much more advanced compared with how they used to be manufactured. Youth Football Drills That Can Be Practiced Alone

When you have a passion for something, you want to pursue it at every available moment. Whether you're a football coach looking for some practice strategies to assign to your players, a parent looking to give your kid a step up, or a player who loves the game and wants to improve, we've come up with some youth football drills that can be practiced alone. Every youth football player should learn to throw and catch the ball properly even if their position doesn't require it on a regular basis.

Passing Drills That Can Be Practiced Alone

• Practice throwing a spiral. Focus on your grip technique as well as your release. Practice at 50% of your throwing power and just concentrate on throwing perfect spirals. The football should roll off the fingers putting a spin on the ball.

• Once you get the spiral down begin to develop accuracy. Again, keep your drills to half speed and focus on achieving the highest accuracy rating. Get a notebook to keep records in and try to improve each time out.

• Once you can throw a perfect spiral at a target on a consistent basis you can begin to increase the power in your throws. Increase the velocity by 10% or so until you obtain the same accuracy rating you achieved at 50% capacity.

• Now its time to throw while you're moving to simulate game activity. Practice throwing from the pocket, rolling out, backpedaling to avoid the rush, throwing in the opposite direction...essentially, get ready for all game conditions.

Get plenty of rest for your arm. The problem with practicing repetitive activities is that they can cause ligament and muscle strain. Practicing football passing drills alone two or three alternate days a week is plenty.

Receiving Drills That Can Be Practiced Alone

• Practice running your routes for each play. Drill these into your subconscious mind. Simulate game action and bring your hands up for the catch while forming a "pocket" with your fingers.

• As a receiver it is important for you to practice "watching the ball into your hands" so that it becomes second nature. To practice this alone, lie on your back and spiral the ball a few feet into the air. Then "watch" the ball right into your hands. Be sure to form a pocket with your hands with your thumbs and index fingers almost touching. Catch the football away from your body and then tuck it in.

Of course, you can perform agility and conditioning drills alone as well. Every youth football player should be taught the self-discipline to exercise. Try these youth football drills whenever you can and watch your game improve.

You can also find many youth football drills on the Internet covering passing, receiving, rushing, defense and more Some drills are free and some require subscription or for you to order a DVD. Free football drills allow you greater flexibility in trying a variety and see what works best for you as the coach and your youth baseball team. Always remember that drills should be age appropriate. The right passing drill for a 14 year-old boy will not suit and 8-year old and vice versa.

Genesis of Football Shirt

The modern day football shirt traces its origin to Victorian era in English history. Prior to 1863, there was no regulation for player's uniform in football. The two rival teams were distinguished from each other by color of the caps and the scarves, worn around the neck. The first football uniform regulation was introduced in 1870. Initially the player, who could afford to wear the shirt more often, was able to play for the team. The first jersey was manufactured in 1879 by Bukta and later in 1883; the term football shirt was coined.

During this period the shirt was made of hard cotton fiber, to withstand shirt tugging during the match. However gradual changes in the rules led to introduction of light weight shirts. The shirts in team colors were initially restricted to players only. But from middle of twentieth century due to new concepts in mass production and steadily increasing demand of the fans; replicas of team shirts were manufactured on mass scale.

The modern version is short sleeved for summer and spring use, and long sleeved for winter. The material used for manufacture of shirt is polyester and nylon, because of their light weight and the comfort they provide to the wearer. Nowadays the shirts are button-less and even without collars.

In 1939, the football league management introduced numbers on the players' shirt. The goalkeeper got number 1 because his position was fixed at the goal post, unlike the other players whose position changed throughout the match. In 1965 substitutes were given 12 and 14 numbers, while the goalie got number 13.

In 1954, FIFA introduced squad numbering system which made it mandatory for players of the national teams to wear the same number throughout the tournament. On April18th 1993, in the League cup the name and the number of each player were printed on the back of the shirt. The 1994 world cup for first time in its history saw, both the name and number printed on the back side of the players.

The football shirt worm by the goal keeper is different from that of his team members. Initially in 1970's the color of the goalie shirt was restricted to green, red, blue or white. The goalie shirt looked like long sleeved vest and the other type looked like, a v-necked polo sweater. It was modified to lighter version and looked like athletic shirt; like the one worn today by goalkeepers.

From the early 19th century heavy cotton uppers, to modern day trendy designer shirt, with huge demand among the fans, the football shirt have come a long way indeed. The replicas of shirts of national or club teams are widely manufactured and easily available for the fans. They wear the replicas of the football shirt to show their love and support for their team. At the end of every college football season an award is given out to the nations top college football player as voted on by a group of 941 media members and past winners. This award is called the Heisman Memorial Award Trophy. While this award is highly publicized by the media and football fans throughout the world, here are some interesting facts that you may not know.

History

The Heisman Award originally began by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City in 1935. It was named after John W Heisman, who was a member of the club. The actual trophy is modeled after former New York University football player Ed Smith in 1934.

The award had always been presented at the Downtown Athletic Club until 2002. The club was located near the site of the World Trade Center towers that were destroyed in the attacks of 9/11. The club was forced to close due in part to financial difficulties resulting from 9/11.

Voting Process

The voting process for football's Heisman Award is on a regional basis. The country is divided into 6 separate regions with a noted media member in charge of each region. This member then chooses a select group of other voters that are football writers, reporters, or TV personalities to also cast votes.

Dividing the country up into 6 regions helps assure there will be no regional bias for any one player. Currently there are 941 members who cast votes. The award is given out in December of each year.

Award Winners

Winners of the Heisman Football award include mostly quarterbacks and running backs. In fact, 41 of the 71 Heisman Award winners are running backs and 23 have been quarterbacks.

Charles Woodson of Michigan has been the one and only defensive player to ever win the award. He did that in 1997. Although he also returned kickoffs and punts, he was primarily a defensive back.

Archie Griffin has the distinction of being the only player in Heisman Award history to win the trophy twice. He did so in 1974 and 1975 while playing with Ohio State.

Two schools are tied with the most number of Heisman Award winners. Both USC and Notre Dame have had 7 past Heisman football trophy winners, although Notre Dame has only had one winner in the last 40 years. Ohio State has had 6 Heisman Award winners.

What Happened To A Few Past Winners?

While there have been many past Heisman Award winners go on to have Hall of Fame careers in the NFL, for many others, just the opposite has happened.

Jason White, the 2003 winner has never played a down in the NFL. Archie Griffin, the only two-time award winner had a dismal football career in Cincinnati. Andre Ware, the 1989 winner, sat on the bench for 4 years and then retired.

Eric Crouch, the 2001 winner out of Nebraska, has never played a game in the NFL. Rashaan Salaam, the 1994 winner, had several drug abuse suspensions in a very short and unpleasant career. Perhaps the most infamous Heisman Award winner of all-time is O.J. Simpson. After having a very illustrious career with the Buffalo Bills, he will always be remembered for his celebrity trial in the murder of his wife and Ronald Goldman.

Football fans everywhere love the Heisman football trophy. Each one has his or her own opinion on who the winner should be. It has become a yearly tradition that keeps on getting bigger every year.

Even small-sided games for 15, 20 and 30 minute intervals will help increase fitness and endurance.

As a separate workout away from the game, It is best for soccer players to alternate sprinting, distance and interval running during a fitness workout. With each workout, players should gradually increase repetitions and improve times.

Here are the best drills for a soccer fitness workout:

300's: On a soccer field, start out on the end line and sprint to mid-field up and back 6 times (50 yards x 6 = 300). High school players should try to run these in less than 70 seconds. After each 300, rest for two minutes and then repeat.

Hills: Find a steady incline hill (no "baby" hills) Sprint up the hill and jog down. The jogging is recovery time, so this can be done slowly. Once players reach the bottom, the should turn around and sprint up the hill again. After five (5) hills, then take a two minutes rest and do five (5) more.

Cones: These are sprints. Place cones about five (5) yards apart for 25 yards. Players should spring to the first cone and then back, then to the second cone and then back, and so on. Five cones up and back is one repetition. Do ten (10) reps and then a one (1) minute rest. Then ten (10) more.

Challenged yet? We're just getting started...

30-30's: This is interval training. Players should begin by jogging for a few minutes and then the fun begins. Next is to alternate 30 seconds of jogging with 30 seconds of sprinting. Do a set of five (5) 30-30's, then rest two (2) minutes and then five (5) more.

120's: This is a full sprint of the length of the soccer field. High school players should try to do this in less than 20 seconds. After reaching the opposite end line, players should jog back, allowing 60 seconds to recover. Do 7-10 of these.

Cooling down and stretching: Players should always take fifteen to twenty minutes to cool down and stretch to conclude fitness training.

Myth 5: My child will become "bulky" and "lose their flexibility and ability to move" on the soccer field.

Truth: This is absolutely false. A properly designed program for both young soccer girls and soccer boys improve body composition (body image), overall health and athletic performance on the soccer field. An effective youth soccer strength and power program has the following components built into it:

1) Exercises to prevent anterior cruciate ligament tears. i.e. Single leg squat
2) Exercises that closely resemble the actions on the soccer field. i.e. Lunges
3) Total body exercises for base strength. i.e. Squats
4) Exercises that build power. i.e. A progressive plyometric (jump) program
5) Conditioning that includes intervals and sprints
6) Exercises that include stop - start and change of direction.
7) Sound nutritional guidelines. i.e. Pre and post training and game meals.

It is vital that you look for these components in any strength and conditioning program for your son or daughter.

College is the wrong academic fit: Just because a school accepts you, that does not mean you will be able to succeed academically there. Make sure that away from athletics, the college has enough to offer you. Also if you come from a small town, will you be comfortable at a massive university that is larger than your hometown?
Picking the wrong school athletically: Just because you accepted a scholarship, it does not mean you will get any playing time. Each year, freshmen and transfers just as or more talented then you show up to campus wanting your playing time. Are you willing to sit on the bench for a few years while your skills improve at a DI school. Or would you be happier at a smaller college where you know you can play the fist year on campus?
Geographic Issues: It is hard to say how you will react and feel attending a college 1,000, 2,000 or even 100 miles from home. Think about this long and hard when you are in the recruiting process. Also if you live in Florida, do you think you could handle snow and cold for months on end if you attend school up North? These factors are often overlooked.

Do not sacrifice your reasons for attending school or what you truly want in a college just because you were offered a soccer scholarship. Football - Defensive Strategy

Bill Belichick is said to be one of the greatest defensive strategists of the modern era. While we're not going to pick apart Bill's game plan to try to figure out why he's so good at what he does, we are going to take a very basic look at defensive strategy and how to make your defense as effective as possible.

Unlike the offense, which essentially dictates how the play is going to go down, the defense is more reactionary, not that it can't take an aggressive stance. We'll get into that later. But for the most part, the defense has to react and react quickly to what the offense is doing. A split second can mean the difference between a stop and a score.

The offense basically has only two play options if you simplify this game. They are pass and run. Depending on which one the offense chooses, the defense must react accordingly.

Most pass plays are pretty obvious. The quarterback will take the ball from center and drop back in the pocket about 2 or 3 yards to pass. This is something that the defense will spot immediately and can react to by having their secondary go into proper coverage, since they now don't have to worry about a run breaking into the secondary. They can give all their attention to the receivers.

But with some pass plays, they are not so obvious. The quarterback may take the ball from center and fake a handoff to a running back. The defense must not allow itself to be faked out by this. They need to keep their eye on the quarterback to see if he still has the ball. There is only so long that he can hide it. In the meantime, the front line of the defense can still stop the running back, even if he doesn't have the ball.

In many cases, the play that is coming is going to be pretty obvious. In a third down and inches to go, the offense is going to look to run the ball. The defense will pretty much jam the box in this scenario in an attempt to keep the running back from making the first down. The same is true with long yardage plays. If it's third down and 20 to go, you can pretty much have your front line blitz the quarterback and maybe even a strong safety along with it. The chances of a run here are pretty slim.

The San Diego Chargers are from San Diego, CA and play their football games in the AFC Western Division. Interestingly, the San Diego Chargers actually began as the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960. Here is a brief history of this popular football team.

As one of the original members of the AFL, the Chargers played their first year in Los Angeles before permanently moving to San Diego. They came to the AFC West by way of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. San Diego plays its football games in Qualcomm Stadium. They have been playing at this stadium since 1968 and the stadium has been the host to 3 different Super Bowls over this time. The team is currently looking to have a new stadium built to replace the aging Qualcomm Stadium.

Barron Hilton, who was also the founder of Hilton Hotels, originally owned the team. He continued to be the owner until selling the team to current owner, Alex Spanos. During the 1960s the Chargers defensive line became know as the "fearsome foursome". They were led by big Ernie Ladd and would often dominate football games.

It wasn't until 1979 and the emergence of QB Dan Fouts, that the Chargers began to experience success. Leading the team to its first playoff berth in 14 years, the Chargers lost in the playoffs that year to the Houston Oilers. That started a string of 4 consecutive years of going to the playoffs, but the team could never get to the Super Bowl.

During this run, the Chargers played in one of the most memorable overtime games in NFL Playoff history. In the 1982 game against the Miami Dolphins, the team raced off to a 24-0 lead, only to lose it by the 3rd quarter. San Diego recovered and eventually won the game in overtime 41-38.

It wasn't until 1995 that the San Diego Chargers broke through to the Super Bowl. It has been to this day their only Super Bowl appearance. The team won the AFC West and went on to upset the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers to gain a spot in the championship game. Unfortunately they had to face Steve Young and the San Francisco 49ers, losing the game 49-26.

Since that season the Chargers have had its share of problems, with only 2 winning seasons and one playoff berth, that coming in 2004. Currently, Marty Shottenheimer now coaches the team.

The San Diego Chargers also have arguably the most striking uniforms of any other football team. They are known for their signature lightning bolt on their helmets and down the sides of their uniform pants.

The game of football features two teams going at each other. One team is on offense and the other team is on defense. We're going to concentrate on the offensive players in this article and the role of each man.

The offense of a team is the key to scoring points. Without a well tuned offense a team doesn't have a chance. That's why each man in the offensive unit has to know his role and execute it to the best of his ability. This involves not only skill but also thinking on his feet. Football is a very technical game in many respects and if a player doesn't have all the plays stuck up in his head, he's not going to know how to react when a certain play is called.

The offense itself is actually run by the coach who calls the plays, even though he's not on the field with his players. But on the field, the game is run by the quarterback. This is probably the most important position in the game of football. A good quarterback can mean the difference between winning and losing, especially in the final minutes. He's the one who hands the ball off to the running backs on a run play or passes it to the receivers on a pass play. Everything falls on his shoulders.

The running backs, which are the halfbacks and fullbacks, are the ones who run the ball on run plays and help give protection to the quarterback on pass plays. They can also act as receivers on pass plays as well. Running backs need to be very quick on their feet. They also need to be strong in order to block for the quarterback. Running backs are probably some of the best athletes on the field.

The wide receivers and the tight ends are the ones who catch the passes thrown by the quarterback. There are a number of routes that these players need to run during the course of a game and each route has to be known beforehand. The routes themselves can be very complicated in an attempt to throw off the defense. Receivers have to be very fast in order to outrun the defense. They also need to have very good hands to catch a football.

The linemen, called guards and tackles, are there for two purposes. On pass plays they are there to provide pass protection for the quarterback so he can have enough time to get his pass off. On run plays they are on the line to create holes for the running backs to run through. In order to do both of these jobs linemen have to be very strong and very big. Some linemen are well over 350 pounds. When these guys hit you, you know you've been hit.

Rounding out the offense is the kicker. He is the one who either kicks the extra point after a touchdown is scored or tries for a field goal if the team is close enough to the goal line but not close enough to go for a touchdown. A kicker has to have very strong legs, as some of the kicks he has to try are from quite a few yards away.

For an offense to be effective, all the men on it have to work together. That's what makes some offenses great and others not so great. It's called teamwork.

With all of our modern technologies and techniques, why is it that there seems to be an ever increasing number of children with Learning Disabilities? You can pay hundreds of dollars for tests that yield diagnoses like dyslexia, ADHD, scotopic sensitivity and learning disabilities, but rarely do you ever get any clear guidance of what to do to help the situation.

So many theories, so many ideas, yet so many children seem to miss out on the learning experience that they deserve. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result, then most remedial help for children with learning difficulties is insanity. Surely there must be an alternative method in treating these conditions, instead of simply repeating the agony of reading over and over again!

Pretty heavy statements I know, but if you are a parent struggling with your child and learning disabilities, then the agony of homework and constantly plugging away with your child teaching them reading, is enough to drive you insane! As another painful bout of homework looms this afternoon, I am sure that many of you are saying to yourself, "Surely there must be something more I can do that is actually going to work!

"The analogy that I use for children and learning difficulties involves one of my favorite things in the world... football!I know, I know, you ladies just don't want to know anything about football, but please take a moment and bear with me as I explain. For all you soccer moms, you will relate to this: if you want your child to play football, there are two ways that you can go: Give him a soccer shirt and send him out on the field to play in the top division. You know what will happen? The other kids will play him off the pitch, and he will return to you depressed and feeling like a failure, or...Take him to football practice and learn the skills of the game: Let the coach teach him to kick, pass, shoot, head and trap the ball, how to tackle and play his position. If he does this first, then when he gets out on the field, he can hold his own and have a reasonable chance of doing well in the game.

Funny thing is, when we keep forcing our children to do homework and remedial reading that they hate, it is just like giving them a jersey and sending them out to play. Just as frustrating, just as discouraging, and just as pointless.

As an Optometrist working in the field for 2 decades, I recognize that the majority of children with learning disabilities have visual problems. That is not to say they cannot see, because almost all of them can. The main problem is that they do not develop the necessary skills to learn, read, write and spell effectively.

We have discovered that, using the correct therapy to train visual skills, every child with learning difficulties can improve. That's right, it is not a misprint, I did in fact say EVERY CHILD. How can they not improve? We are simply teaching them skills. If a player goes to football practice, they will improve as well. So our way is simple, and it's different. Take a pause from the game, and TEACH THE CHILD THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO PLAY THE GAME OF READING!

That's what my special vision therapy for children and learning disabilities does: it teaches then the skills they need to read. It is quick, fun, interesting and, above all, very effective in improving a child's visual skills and hence reading, writing and spelling ability. The Grip for Throwing a Perfect Spiral

It can be difficult for young football players to get a good grip on the football as their hands may not be large enough. That doesn't preclude them from learning the proper technique with some slight modifications.

• The football should be gripped lightly with the fingertips and not rest in the palm of the hand. The light grip allows for increased ball control. This can be a problem for younger players with small hands where there is no choice but to use the palm.

• It's important to place your index finger on the seam to put a "spin" or spiral on the football upon release. Don't force the spin; let it roll naturally off the fingers. Trying to over spin the ball is a common mistake.

• As you step back in the pocket, hold the football next to your ear as you look for your target. The ball will be cradled in the "U" between thumb and index finger.

Practice throwing spiral passes with this release technique at 50% of your throwing capacity until you perfect it. You can then start increasing your velocity as you begin to master the skill.

• Keeping your eye on your receiver, take your arm backward and then "spring" it forward in a circular motion releasing the football at the top of the arc.

• A good release will spin the football off the index finger as you let it go. The other fingers are used only for supporting the ball and not for putting a spiral on it.

• As you release the football, be sure to continue with the follow through for spin and accuracy.

Passing Accuracy in Football

Now that you've mastered the spiral pass you have to work on hitting your target. Many football recruiters list passing accuracy as the primary passing skill when selecting potential quarterbacks. A perfect spiral is of no use if it's bouncing along the field, or worse, in the arms of an opposing player. Again, throw the football at about 50% velocity when performing accuracy drills. They'll be plenty of time to work on your power once you have mastered the basics.

• Get yourself set in your stance with your non-throwing hip pointed towards your receiver. Being "set" is crucial for accuracy and power.

• When you are ready to pass, cock your shoulder and step towards your target when you release the football.

Follow through on the pass with the palm of your throwing hand facing the ground. Here is an example video demonstration of Peyton Manning follow through on the pass.

Throwing an accurate spiral pass in football is not a difficult process. Repetition of basic throwing mechanics is the key along with adequate rest. Youth football players should practice these passing tips every other day to master them.

To assume that everybody knows and understands the game of football would be a foolish thing to do since it is such a complicated game. And while we're not going to dive in depth into the game in this article, we are going to go over some of the basics of the game itself so that you have a pretty decent idea of how it's played.

The game of football is played on a field marked off with hash marks. Each hash across the field represents one yard from the hash before it. There are 98 of these hash marks plus two goal line marks for a total of 100 yards. Just past the goal lines are goal posts. These actually serve a function which we'll get to shortly.

The object of the game is for one team to move the football from one end of the field all the way down to the other and cross the opposing goal line. If they manage to do this they score six points. After they do this they then get a chance to score extra points either by kicking the ball between the goal post uprights (that's what they are there for) or by passing the ball or running the ball over the goal line again. If they kick the ball over they get one point. If they run the ball in or pass the ball in they get two points. There is also the option of trying for a field goal if they think they can't get the ball over the goal line. A field goal will give the team three points.

There are certain restrictions placed on the offensive team (the one trying to score) when attempting to get their points. They have to be able to move the ball at least 10 yards for every four times they attempt to move the ball, called a down. If they don't get the 10 yards within the four downs they turn the ball over to the other team. As long as they keep getting the 10 yard minimum they hold onto the ball until they either score or fail to get their 10 yards.

The team on the other end of the ball, called the defense, has to try to keep the team with the ball from scoring. They have many options open to them in order to do this. They can tackle a runner who is carrying the ball, a pass receiver who has caught a pass or try to physically take the ball away form the other team, either by causing a fumble or intercepting a pass.

If no team has a higher score by the end of four quarters, each of which are 15 minutes long, then they have one quarter of overtime and play until one team scores. If neither team scores then the game ends in a tie. Yes, football is one of those games where you can have ties.

These are obviously just very basic rules and the game itself is a lot more complicated than what you see here. In future articles we'll dive more deeply into the game itself, including football strategy.

Located in the mile high city of Denver, CO, the Denver Broncos are one of the NFL's most successful football franchises. John made the decision to stick with football and the rest is history.

The Broncos have only 3 football Hall of Fame players. The first one was Willie Brown, who played with the team from 1963-66 at CB. Next is Tony Dorsett, who played his only season with the team in 1988. Finally, there is John Elway, who played from 1983-1998.

2009 Pittsburgh Steelers Fantasy Football Preview

The Pittsburg Steelers won their 6th Super Bowl title and 2nd in 4 years in 2008 by defeating the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in a heartstopping classic. Ben Roethlisberger rebounded from his poor showing a couple years earlier against Seattle by completing 21-30 passes for 256 yards and the game winning TD to Santonio Holmes with just seconds left. Although the Steelers capped their impressive season by winning the Super Bowl they were an inconsistent bunch all year long in terms of fantasy performance. With pretty much the entire team returning this year will the Steelers offer fantasy owners more week to week options heading into 2009? I examine that now.

As good as the ultimate result was for Roethlisberger and the Steelers last year the QB proved to be a nightmare for owners last year with his inconsistent play. Roethlisberger finished2008 with 3314 passing yards along with 17 TD's and 15 Int's for a rating of 80.2. Not exactly the type of numbers you are looking for out of your number 1 QB. The bottom line is that Pittsburg is, was, and will always be a power running team and quite frankly when Ben is asked to throw a lot he usually gets himself into trouble. Ben is a very good QB just not a good fantasy QB. He possesses great leadership skills and has his statistical moments but do not trust him with your fantasy team because you will be greatly disappointed. Ben actually went in the 3rd round in my draft last summer and the owner who selected him won 2 games all year. Owners seem to be getting the point as Roethlisberger has been going around the 9th-10th rounds in the mock drafts I have been participating in. Treat him as a serviceable number 2 options heading into 2009 but nothing more than that. There are far better options.

When successful the meat and potatoes of the Steeler offense lies with the running game. Last year the team's backfield was hit with numerous injuries leaving Head Coach Mike Tomlin painfully thin at the position. Once again Willie Parker failed to make it through the entire season missing 5 games and finishing the season with 791 yards and 5 TD's. Parker has only played 16 games once in his career and he will turn 29 about halfway through the season. When healthy Parker is definitely a number 1 option at RB but when is he ever healthy? Furthermore, the Steelers will certainly be looking for 2nd year back Rashard Mendenhall to make much more of an impact in his sophomore season after playing in only 4 games as a rookie. The Steelers are extremely high on Mendenhall who is built more in the mode of what a typical Pittsburg back usually looks like. At 5-10 225 Mendenhall is a power runner who will inevitably steal short yardage and goal line carries from Parker who has never really been a TD machine to begin with. With both Parker and Mendenhall both out of commission the Steelers emergency plan actually stepped in and played fairly well. Mewelde Moore rushed for 589 yards and 5 TD's down the stretch run while also chipping in with 320 yards receiving and another score. The ex Minnesota Vikings castoff proved more than capable of holding the fort down while Parker was readying himself for the playoffs. In terms of fantasy potential I like Mendenhall the most out of all the Steelers RB's for the upcoming season. It will be a miracle if Parker stays healthy the entire year and even if he does Mendehall will be the goal line back at the very least. That being said treat Parker as a low end number 3 fantasy RB heading into the season. Mendenhall is far more interesting because if (when) Parker goes down he will have a real opportunity to become a stud due to his talents and the system he plays in. Mendenhall has been going between the 8th-10th rounds in the mock drafts I have been doing and spending a late round selection on him could prove to be a treasure for you as the season goes on. With Mendenhall back in the fold Moore's value goes down dramatically and he has typically not been drafted in these preliminary mock drafts.

Similarly to Roethlisberger the Steelers receiving corps has it's moments but in my estimation provides fantasy owners with nothing more than stop gap/match-up options on a very limited basis. Although showing definite signs of slowing down Hines Ward continues to be the Steelers number 1 option through the air. Ward remains a cagey veteran who is almost as well known for his blocking skills as he is at catching the ball. Ward had a really nice '08 statistically accounting for 82 catches for 1047 yards and 7 TD's. The 1047 yards represents his best yardage total since he went for 1163 in 2003. Ward will continue to be the receiver that Roethlisberger will look for when he is in a pinch or when the Steelers need a clutch catch. After you grab your first 3 receivers Ward is a nice option for you to have on your bench who is worthy of playing time depending upon who Pittsburg is playing. Super Bowl hero Holmes will be the Steelers number 2 option come opening day. Holmes caught 55 balls for 821 yards and 5 TD's in 2008 and with Nate Washington leaving for Tennessee should see more balls thrown his way. Holmes has much more big play ability than Ward does at this stage of their careers and thus Holmes is more valuable in fantasy terms especially if your league awards bonuses for long TD's as mine does. Treat Holmes as a nice number 3 WR or Flex option come draft day this August. The only other Steeler receiver that is worth a look is 2nd year pro Limas Sweed. Sweed had a rather forgettable rookie campaign catching only 6 balls for 64 yards and failed to reach the end zone. Pittsburg has big plans for Sweed and he is the big target the team has been yearning for since the departure of Plaxico Burress. Sweed has some real sleeper potential heading into '09 and is worthy of a late round pick. If he happens to not get drafted in your league be sure to snag him off the waiver wire if you get a chance and let the chips fall where they may. Keep and eye on him. TE Heath Miller is really not a number 1 option and although at times Ben will look for him in the Red Zone he is not really utilized enough to be anything more than a backup used only in emergency purposes.

The Steelers DST is always a solid unit and if you play in a league like mine that rewards DST's with enormous point totals that can greatly assist your chances of winning a championship. I know full well what a good DST can do as I rode the Eagles DST to a title last year. With Troy Polamalu and James Harrison continuing to anchor down the defence treat the Steelers DST as an elite unit and one of the top 3 DST's on the board this summer. Football - Is It Becoming Too Dangerous?

Football was always a dangerous sport. As far as physical contact goes, there is no sport that has more of it. But as dangerous as football has always been, it is more dangerous now than ever before and not so much because the game itself has changed. It's more dangerous because the players who participate in the game have changed. Some would say for the better. But have they? We're not going to take a stand either way in this article but simply present both sides of the argument. We'll leave it to you to determine if football itself has become too dangerous to play.

Let's start with the theory that football has become too dangerous and then we can present opposing arguments. The main reason that critics claim that football has become too dangerous is that the players themselves have become way too big. Years ago, to have a man on a team who was 300 pounds was an amazing thing to see. Now, a 300 pound lineman is average. Men are constantly topping 325 and 350 with no sweat at all. When bigger bodies start falling on you and running into you, there is going to be a greater probability that you're going to get hurt, even with all the padding.

Football players are also faster than they were years ago. When a running back is carrying the football into the secondary and he gets run at by a charging linebacker at the speed of which these guys come at you, well, let's just say it's not the most pleasant feeling in the world. You can get more than just the wind knocked out of you.

Many would sat that the number of injuries today more than support this theory that football has become too dangerous. Many injuries, if not life threatening, come very close to it and in many cases have ended careers. Plus there is also the painful truth that many of these players, years after they retire, have aches and pains that stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Those who say that football has not become too dangerous and argue against the "bigger player" problem claim that these bigger players are in better condition than players of years ago and therefor can withstand more punishment. They say that it is because these men are in better condition that the game is not only not more dangerous, but may even be less dangerous than ever, especially with the advances and improvements made in the equipment that they wear. Faster players mean faster players at both ends of the field, thus making it easier for a running back to dodge that oncoming linebackers running tackle.

Again, it is not our intention to take either side. Certainly there are valid points to be made for each side. A football player's mother will probably feel the game is way too dangerous since she's worrying about her little boy getting his skull cracked. But for the casual or even big fan, this may not be something that they give much thought at all to. Football is what it is and they accept it.
